History of Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa
The Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa in Rancho Mirage, California has a rich history. It was originally built as the Thunderbird Country Club. Over time it went through numerous ownership changes and renovations until 1967 when Howard Hughes re-purchased the property intending to turn it into his residence. He lived there for two years before he relocated to Las Vegas where he died in 1976 at age 70.
The resort sat vacant for over ten years after that but then opened under new management in 1988 as Rancho Las Palmas Resort and eventually became part of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide chain in 1993 which is now known as Westin Hotels & Resorts worldwide today. The entire Rancho Mirage area is home to many celebrities and entertainers including Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra & Dean Martin.
